Even though we do have consequences, I know and I’ve seen that what works best is Positive Discipline. When the kids are learning a new skill like potty training or working on a behavior like treating the siblings kindly, I love to use positive discipline charts. I just draw a really basic grid and say, if you earn five stars, you get to do something special. I have learned that a non material reward works best, like having a “painting party” or a special lunch date with the grandparents or making our own play doh. Working toward something makes them feel proud and builds confidence. It also makes you feel better than saying stop doing that, repeatedly and you can usually get them to choose an activity that you’d like them to do anyway!
